Icadyptes 0.2 is released!

Icadyptes 0.2 is released, almost exactly 7 months after the 0.1 release. While this may sound like the second release, it is actually the fourth or fifth ISO. There are plenty of changes, countless bug fixes, many new packages, and it is much more refined. Of course it still needs work, but I think Icadyptes is ready to be publicised. We have Git on the repositories now, a forum, a much better website, and a fast mirror (all hosted on the same VPS running Icadyptes). The ISO has grown to 142MiB, with the core/ repository totaling 128MiB, and with extra/ at 298MiB. The installer and resulting system can be used completely off of a serial console without any special configuration. The installer also supports Reiser4, but take note that GRUB cannot boot off of it, so /boot must be on a different filesystem. The toolchain is improved, with GCC 4.3.x (coming from CVS snapshots), glibc 2.8, and we are now using HJL's Linux-only Binutils patched to only use GNU linking hashes. X is in good shape and is very up to date in extra/, and e17 is in reasonable shape. I was hoping to ship with Linux 2.6.28.1, but since it is not released yet it is on 2.6.28. Everything is much more fine-tuned, and the kernel is considerably more tweaked than it was for the 0.1 release. Firefox and Claws Mail are up to date in extra/, and we have a SVN nightly of Transmission that supports IPv6. If you wish to see the past few day's changes, take a look at Gitweb. I intended to release 0.2 on the 13th (Zenserver 0.1's two year anniversary), but it ended up taking up till now to be ready.

We still need developers, ideas, bug reports, testing, and use in general if you are interested :-).

Many thanks to all who have made this possible with support, ideas, suggestions, crticism, and believing this was possible. Here is an incomplete credits list (not all are directly related to Icadyptes, but have lead up to it): Arch Linux, Zenwalk, Larhzu, Borromini, aliverius, T260G, godane, laprjns, bioe007, ks1, rxMokka, Konimaka, Michael Verret, Rapid Xen, nenolod, hyperion, ichat, _PN_boy, my parents, my friends back east, Alex Sweet, TWR, Judland, and many others.
